Types of navigational buoys and beacons and their meaning

Buoys are floating devices that serve to guide boat operators on the water and provide them with important information. There are many types of navigational buoys, and each of them has a specific meaning.

Lateral buoys

Side buoys are used to mark the side of a channel for boatmasters to use when upstream to avoid obstructions.dangerous stalls.

Port buoys (Left)

Leave all buoys completely green on your port side (left) when heading upstream. (facing the current)

Starboard Buoys (Right)

Leave all buoys fully red on your starboard (right) side when heading upstream. (facing the current)

Warning buoys (Danger)

Yellow buoys indicate potential hazards. You must move away from them because, depending on the water level of the lake, they are not always visible.

Obstruction buoys (Danger)
